Ear Infections

An ear infection (acute otitis media) is most often a bacterial or viral infection that affects the air-filled space behind the eardrum known as the middle ear. Children are more likely than adults to have ear infections. Three out of four children will experience an ear infection by their third birthday.

Ear infections frequently become painful due to the inflammation and buildup of fluids in the ear.  Because ear infections often clear up on their own, treatment may begin with pain management and observation.  Ear infection in infants and severe cases in general may require antibiotics.  Long-term problems related to ear infections can cause hearing loss and serious complications.  Children who have frequent ear infections may need surgery to place small tubes inside their ears to relieve pain and pressure and restore hearing.

The onset of symptoms is usually rapid and may include ear pain, hearing loss, fever, and headache.  Other symptoms may include drainage from the ear, difficulty sleeping, and loss of balance.  Children with ear infections may tug or pull on their ears, cry more than usual, and act more irritable than usual.
